Ear wax usually clears on its own, but sometimes it builds up and blocks the ear, causing muffled hearing, fullness or ringing. Our nurses look in your ear first, then use body-temperature water and a gentle flow to wash the wax out.
Before your visit
- Use ear-softening drops twice a day for 3 to 5 days before your appointment. Olive oil or a pharmacy wax-softening product both work.
- Don’t use cotton swabs; they push wax deeper.
- Bring your medication list.
Tell us first if you
- Have ever had a hole in your eardrum, ear tubes or ear surgery
- Have ear pain, discharge or an ear infection now
- Have hearing in only one ear
If irrigation isn’t safe for you, we’ll explain other options.
